Humboldt University – Centre for British Studies
The Centre for British Studies at Berlin’s Humboldt University annually selects twenty-five candidates for its acclaimed interdisciplinary Master in British Studies programme. This postgraduate degree course starts every year in October and is open to graduates from any academic subject. Applicants need to have a good first degree in any subject and a very good knowledge of English. The course lasts 1½ years for students whose first degree course is equivalent to at least 210 ECTS credits (3½ years of full time study), and 2 years for students whose first degree course is equivalent to less than 210 but at least 180 ECTS credits (3 years of full time study).
On the M.B.S. course, students from different nations and with different academic backgrounds study British history, culture and literature, as well as law, politics, business and economy. Following an introductory semester, students in their second semester may choose between two options, ‘Economy, Law, Politics’ and ‘Culture, Media and Cultural Management’. The two semesters in Berlin are followed by an internship with a company, public institution or other suitable organisation within the United Kingdom (subject to UK visa requirements for non-EU nationals). The Centre for British Studies helps students to arrange their internship and has a large number of partners in the UK. During the last part of the programme, students complete a Master Thesis. Internship and Master Thesis last three months each on the 1½ year programme, and six months each on the 2 year programme.
The teaching staff consists of academics and practitioners from Germany and the United Kingdom. All classes are conducted in English. The M.B.S. was reaccredited in 2008 with excellent results. The Centre’s graduates have turned out to be flexible, success-oriented, young adults who combine academic and business skills with a high level of intercultural competence.
The Centre for British Studies does not charge tuition fees.
