The Neurogastroenterology Group, Queen Mary, University of London invites applications for a 3 year PhD studentship supported by Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research commencing October/November 2010. The studentship comes with a tax free stipend of £15,510 (including London allowance) and covers tuition fees up to the value for UK/EU students, and all related research costs. The studentship is open to UK/EU and overseas students who posses either a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
The purpose of PhD studentships is to encourage young graduates to train in non-animal research methods, with projects which aim to develop alternatives to replace animal experiments.
The Neurogastroenterology group has recently pioneered the use of electrophysiological recordings of sensory nerve activity from isolated human colon and appendix, providing a human tissue alternative to studies currently conducted in animals. The aim of the studentship will be to further characterise the response of human visceral sensory nerves to noxious mechanical and inflammatory stimuli, and examine the effects of novel treatments for visceral pain on these responses.
Research will be conducted at the Whitechapel campus, within the Wingate Institute, a dedicated centre for clinical and pre-clinical Neurogastroenterology research (http://www.icms.qmul.ac.uk/neurogastro/), and the adjacent Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, which house over 300 scientists in state of the art facilities (http://www.icms.qmul.ac.uk/).
