5000 here, 5000 there

Yesterday the head of the Passport and Visa Department of the RA Police Hovhannes Kocharyan told our reporter that by the May 6 elections the dead people on the voter lists will be drastically eliminated and the voter lists will look better. But by saying eliminating he needs such a small number that the results cannot affect the ultimate outcome of elections. “Over 300 names were pulled out from the voter lists, the majority of which as I mentioned are dead. The rest are the dead people, who remained on the list because the owner of the house hasn’t applied to us to have their names taken out. But in this process the owners have become more often. They call and tell us that the previous owners are registered on their addresses. We explain to them that if the owners don’t apply to have the names taken out these names can remain there for 100 years. I think when we submit the final lists at least 5000 names will be taken out,” said Kocharyan. Let us remember that compared to the elections 2008 during these elections the voter lists were added by 170 thousand people. The opposition also voiced its concerns about this fact. So did a range of domestic NGOs. After the presidential elections 2008 the opposition had been blaming the government for exaggerating the voter lists. So now the government agrees with this accusation and agrees to take out 5000 names.
