Purpose of launching series of rallies

11/10/2011

The Armenian National Congress has eventually become active by announcing that they are organizing a series of rallies and strikes in the Freedom square. Even though Ter-Petrosyan said that this was the demand of the supporters but they had planned it in advance and the speeches were very sharp. As during the previous rallies, this time there were contradictions too. Specifically, the ones that had speeches before the opposition leader came up with sharp critics, but later Ter-Petrosyan said that they were not maximalists. Ter-Petrosyan spoke about the failure of the dialogue and said that they had guessed it long before that everything would lead to failure of the negotiations. He also announced that in parallel with the demonstrations they would be ready to start the dialogue at any time again. The opposition leader is not satisfied with the delegation in charge of dialogue so far and authorizes ANC central office member Manushak Petrosyan to keep direct contact with the presidential office. Not being satisfied with it either the opposition leader published the letter of opposition imprisoned activist Tigran Arakelyan, in which he petitions the ANC not to worry about his imprisonment and continue the dialogue. In fact besides launching active series of rallies the demonstration had also a goal to continue the dialogue. We wonder what the purpose of continuing the rallies is if they are sure that there will be no positive result. There can be several versions and scenarios. The dialogue may result in compromise and stop the mass demonstrations. The leaders of the ANC are not sure whether the rallies will continue or no because the recent rally was held in the context of foreign political processes. There is also an opinion that the strike and demonstrations in the square was the answer of Russia to Serzh Sargsyan’s visit to the West. It will be clear what the scenario of developments may be because as the authorities will act either with pressure or inactivity. Anyway, the one-week period announced by the opposition ends with the visit of the French president Nicolas Sarkozy. In other words, the strike in the square in Yerevan may be a very good tool for the authorities to promote its propaganda and PR.
