Suspension for three months

30/09/2011

The latest rally of the ANC opposition power brought some change in their strategy. The opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan said that “they had to increase the pressure and organize larger demonstrations often, as well as make the authorities fulfill our demands…” The opposition leader announced that they were suspending the series of rallies for three months. The demands were not new, and were only adapted to the time of autumn. Before the demonstration the opposition members were demanding by-elections till the middle of October, otherwise they were threatening with mass protests. During his speech Te-Petrosyan said that they were demanding from the authorities to hold by-elections till the end of the year and amend the electoral law before the elections in order to include their recommendations. The other demands in fact are not so important because the ANC leader said that they were ready to embrace any reasonable compromise on part of the authorities concerning their demand. This means that the ANC made one more step to gain time till the upcoming elections by threatening the authorities to make the demonstrations larger. One can clearly see whether the authorities are afraid of that or no: none of the important officials was in Armenia that day. Ter-Petrosyan’s main message during the rally was addressed at the external world, i.e. mainly the US and Russia. He cited ideas from Wikileaks, slightly criticized the Americans for backing Sargsyan and tried to make the US and Russia believe that he was going to be better. It is more evident in the context of the prize Serzh Sargsyan received in the US and United Russia congress to follow in Moscow. Levon Ter-Petrosyan wanted to show everyone that he is the only capable man, but one can understand how seriously they relate to his words only by reading their cables discovered by Wikileaks.
