Another discovered cable on part of Wikileaks concerns the meeting between the US Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovich and former president Robert Kocharyan on May 8. The Ambassador met with the former president to find out his opinion concerning the relations between Armenia and Turkey and upcoming mayoral election. When the Ambassador asked a question concerning the upcoming mayoral elections Kocharyan said that the diplomatic representation should not politicize those issues and they (foreign diplomats) are using issues concerning elections to impose pressure on Armenia. Kocharyan emphasized it was what had been done during his tenure too. Yovanovich said that the US had never intervened with Armenia’s internal processes of elections, but they would be closely looking at the mayoral elections because almost half of the population was going to take part in them. Kocharyan said that the problem of small countries was that they were always subject to external pressure either from Moscow, Brussels or Washington. “You are complying our domestic political developments to your interests. By encouraging oppositionists you are making them a tool for pressure on Armenia,” said Kocharyan. The US Ambassador refuted those allegations and said that the US had never endorsed anyone during elections and she made such announcement during the mayoral elections. In answer to the Ambassador’s question whether Kocharyan was going to be involved in the mayoral elections in any way Kocharyan said no and added that he believed in the success of RPA and PA. He also said that he had approved the current coalition’s decision to nominate separate candidates in the mayoral elections.
