Suicide-focused Armenia

“In Armenia the number of suicides and attempts of suicide has increased,” during yesterday’s press conference mentioned the Head of the Census and Demography Department of the National Statistics Service Karine Kuyumjyan. Kuyumjyan said that major part of suicides and attempted suicides is committed in Armenia by unemployed and people, who depend on social welfares. “57.3% of recorded suicides and attempted suicides in 2010 were committed by unemployed, while 17.7% – by pensioners,” Kuyumjyan told a press conference in Yerevan. 592 cases of suicides (225 cases) and attempted suicides (367 cases) were recorded in 2010 that is 18.9% higher compared to 2009 (498 cases). Kuyumjyan said that 28,000 people died in 2010 that is 1.6% higher compared to 2009. Moreover, the attempts of suicide among the people aging 18-29 have increased by 18%.
