Why are sociologists active?

“We must light candles every day in order not to let Armenia go through the path of self-liquidation,” said the head of the Armenian sociologists’ association Gevorg Poghosyan and added that in the 21st century there will be countries that will meet bankruptcy and dissolve. “The countries that fail to implement an effective management will be dissolved by the super-states and will be included in other units. Currently the tendencies are negative in Armenia,” he said and added some information concerning their recent survey. As a result of this survey, according to them, the reason why people leave Armenia is the threat of war in Karabakh. “The more the risk of war becomes, the more people emigrate. We have observed degradation in all the sectors surveyed by sociologists, and these sectors were the healthcare, education, defense, etc.,” he said. He says that this is more dangerous than the unrest consequences of March 1. It is strange that the latter did not speak of corruption, poverty, unemployment, the policy against the small and medium business sector as factors supporting emigration. Even though he said that the survey had been ordered by “European institutions”, it is not hard to guess that this looks more like have been ordered by the authorities. Poghosyan also spoke about a survey for the purpose of getting information about the political sector but he did not bring any statistics and numbers. According to this survey, the issue of elections is not an actual priority for the people of Armenia. “The opinion of the society is mobilized only several months before elections,” he said. However G.Poghosyan has found out that people accept the political powers such as the RPA, PA, ARF and ANC, and in the recent times the People’s Party as well. “It is the same for people whether the Congress, RPA or ARF will be elected. They are more interested in living in a good country without corruption or other negative things. People will accept those leaders who solve these problems,” said Gevorg Poghosyan, who from time to time competes with Aharon Adibekyan for the title of “the pro-government sociologist”. By the way, it is a very interesting fact that even though the authorities say that there is a lot of time till the elections and it is a non-election period, they are doing things that are characteristic to elections and it seems they are getting ready for the campaign. The coalition parties are more active and are establishing local offices everywhere, the RPA and PA are in a strong competition, etc. In addition, the experience shows that sociologists become active several months before elections too.
