14/07/2010

Yesterday by a decision of Yerevan court of Kentron and Nork-Marash, Davit Kiramijyan, an activist of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), was released after giving a written undertaking not to leave the city. Davit was caught unawares by the news of his release. Davit’s relatives were also unaware of his release. "At two o’clock the doors of my cell opened and I was invited to a meeting with the chief guard. The latter said I was free and advised me to be careful in the future. Later I learnt that the proceedings were discontinued since there was not strong evidence against me. My innocence will be proved in court," Davit Kiramijyan told A1+. His case will be investigated by the judge of the first instance court of Kentron and Nork-Marash of Yerevan Mnatsakan Martirosyan. Davit Kiramijyan was among at least 15 people detained on May 31 in Yerevan in clashes between riot police and several dozen supporters of the opposition ANC. The police used force to keep the oppositionists from entering the city’s newly renovated Liberty Square. All detainees except Kiramijyan were freed in the following days. The 19-year-old university student was charged with “hooliganism” and remanded in two-month custody by a Yerevan court based on Article 28 of the Criminal Code of Armenia.
