Conflicts within the Congress

21/06/2010

Yesterday in the Armenian political life the most popular topic was the resignation of the ANM board deputy-chair Khachatur Kokobelyan. Almost all the news agencies publicized that Kokobelyan has submitted resignation, which wasn’t even discussed. The ANM has taken the resignation under consideration. According to the information circulating, Kokobelyan’s resignation was due to his recent pro-governmental activities. In particular, according to our information, his attempt to create conflict between the ANM and the ANC (Armenian National Congress) by spreading news that according to some international surveys the ANM has a higher rating than the ANC and that it would be better for the ANM to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections alone. Rumors came that Kokobelyan who owns quarries and water power plants in the regions was the informer of the Armenian government within the All-Armenian Movement. Recently even the leadership of the Armenian National Congress has been stating this loudly. According to various rumors, the head of the ANM board Ararat Zurabyan has also submitted resignation request. Neither Kokobelyan nor Zurabyan yesterday clarified their decisions. In the meantime yesterday various news agencies would bring up various versions of these phenomena; however none of those would reveal the essence of the story. In fact, it’s been more than a year that the opposition electorate has been quite frustrated about the passivity of the ANC and the unclear activities. They indeed expect certain actions on part of the opposition. In fact, part of the opposition raised the concern of the electorate, which indeed was denied and ignored. It means that this fact may serve as a gap between the radical and constructive wings of the opposition.
