By protecting the changes to the law on languages the minister of education of Armenia Armen Ashotyan is evidently sure that the danger of public complaint is not as serious as it seems. The Ombudsman of Armenia Armen Harutyunyan has also brought up arguments against the necessity of teaching mother language in the schools. He claimed that it’s time that we look at us from the side and claimed that the teaching in the foreign language in schools is an additional opportunity to change the Armenian nation. This means that the bill will be advocated at any cost. But the question is “why should the Armenian nation be changed now and why wouldn’t we look at us with the eyes of the English or Russian speakers?” The answer is simple. Although the society hasn’t brought up a direct demand to make the main language Russian or any other but the majority that is the society is not going to majorly struggle against this bill. Today more than ever they have grounds to realize their “conspiracy” plans without a serious resistance. Several people, who speak and think in Armenia have in a quite simple and understandable way explained the threats implied in this bill. The reaction to this is the lenient smile of the minister and the Ombudsman. And the smile says that you will thank us later, you slow-minded. Having not seen any other method of struggle last week the group of the Armenian nationalists has responded in a quite strict way to the initiative of the minister of education of RA. In an open text they have reminded the minister that the education system of Armenia should direct the population to learning and strengthening the Armenian as a national language. Only the fact of thinking of teaching in a foreign language is considered betrayal and everybody knows what the traitors “end up with.” The Armenian mother land, Armenian nation and culture are three things strongly linked to each other. Without the existence of one of the three the rest cannot survive and the basis of the culture is indeed the language. The infringement any of the mentioned things will cause the decisive counterattack of the Armenian nationalists. “In Armenia the education has been and should continue to be in Armenian. The Armenian entities, who don’t quite well understand the necessity of this, only have one choice – refuse the posts they are occupying.” Otherwise the nationalists promise to send them to the “garbage can of the history.” During these days so many substantiated arguments have been brought up against this project that the attempt of writing about this becomes meaningless. However there is another important question. You see, the bill to the law on language of the minister of education doesn’t yet work so our self-identification is not de jure endangered yet. But whose self-identification are we speaking about? Whose identity are they trying to save? You can ask this question to the majority of the Armenians whether they are satisfied that they think in Armenian; whether they are happy that by God’s will they were born Armenians and not British or Russian. On Sunday when watching Tashir 2010 on H1 it became clear to me that this bill was created in the right place, at the right time and confirms the reality that we have. It’s been several days that the Armenian stars assemble in the Kremlin to as they say make the Armenians of Russia happy. It is not quite original to write about the Armenian pop or award ceremony. Every year it seems that it couldn’t be any worse but the opportunities of outdated and slavish way of thinking are unlimited. This event exceeds with the skills of taking the audience as fools year by year. This was combined by the simplest and unprofessional work of the hosts – Yegor Glumov, Mark Saghatelyan, who with their proficient Russian became incredibly uninteresting and unprofessional due to the presence of the Armenian audience. They are making efforts to speaking in Armenian because they are sure that the spectators present at the hall would be thrilled by the way they’d speak impolite and homely Armenian. And the problem is that unfortunately they were not mistaken. The falseness of the ceremony was obvious everywhere especially when they were miming in the phonogram especially in the song about Samvel with some last last name, who was eating “khashlama and barbecue in Artsakh.” There would be no necessity to write about this concert if the hall wasn’t full only with Armenians. In the hall was also the brother of the Armenian Catholicos – the leader of the Russian wing of the Armenian Apostolic church. I wish the cameramen were professional enough not to show this man on TV in a large scale. But no the priest was following the concert on the stage with a mild smile. And on the stage was Tina Kandelaki. And the audience would react to each word of Kandelaki the way the public reacts to the words uttered by the Pope of Rome in the square of the Saint Peter Church. It was so unpleasant to watch this from the side… It is even spare to mention that every single “shnorhakalutyun” uttered from the lips of the Russians would be escorted by lofty applause and shouts. The king of the Armenian music and culture Tata was representing the culture of the Armenian nation during the award ceremony (the arranger of the songs of Tata finds the music of Komitas “square-shaped”). If Tata is the king of the Armenian music then the queen was Irina Alegrova. Her patriotic grim song was also in the style of rabis because as I said it was a patriotic song. “Bravo!” the audience was exclaiming. Several women, who were chewing gums in the hall, were even excited by Alegrova’s song. They have missed Armenia. Today’s Armenia is so accessible for them. After the amendments to the law on language all this will become more accessible for them almost like from home.
