What will Medvedev bring from Turkey?

16/05/2010

Today the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev is paying a two-day visit to Turkey. Judging from the statements of the president before the visit and the framework of the to-be discussed issues a quite tangible “rapprochement” will be registered in the Turkish-Russian relations with the possible consequences for Armenia stemming from that. It is evident that Medvedev is planning to discuss with the Turkish authorities issues directly related to Armenia. The foreign affairs minister of Turkey Ahmed Davutoglu has stated about those back in the last week by mentioning that the agenda of the meeting with Medvedev also includes issues related to the resolution of the NKR conflict. It is interesting that almost a week has passed since this statement but neither Russia, nor Turkey, nor Armenia have provided any clarifications about this. In fact the president of Russia can at least formally discuss the NKR conflict with the OSCE Minsk group member state presidents – French and the US presidents. Otherwise this will mean that Turkey has automatically become a negotiating party in the NKR conflict resolution process. This is what Turkey and Azerbaijan have been striving for as a result of the “initiating policy” of Armenia. By the way, it is also interesting that after the visit to Turkey Medvedev is planning to visit Armenia and the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan is going to visit Azerbaijan. This is approximately what the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs do after their visits to the region.
