Did Aliyev get green light in the US?

20/04/2010

“The issue of opening the border between Armenia and Turkey is the business of these two countries and no one should interfere this process,” said the Azeri president Ilham Aliyev yesterday. He also said that the international community’s efforts to open the borders have only one purpose to enable “Armenia breath easily.” Aliyev’s announcement was sensational during the entire period of the Armenian-Turkish football diplomacy. During the past one and half years the authorities of Azerbaijan have been announcing that Turkey should not open the border with Armenia unless there is a progress in the settlement of the conflict of Karabakh. By saying improvement they first of all mean the dispatching of the Armenian armed forces from the liberated lands. Thus, after the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan, Rejep Tayip Erdogan and Barak Obama in the US (when it turned out that the US government had invited the Azeri president as well) Aliyev unexpectedly announced that the issue of opening the border between these two countries was the business of the two countries. It will become clear in the future what kind of assurances the US and Turkish governments have received by the Armenian party, which has inspired Azerbaijan so much.
