Shortage of professionals in Karabagh

This was the topic discussed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Karabagh Kamo Atayan during a press conference held on October 24. He stated that there are many problems in this field and that they are going to take certain measures in solving them. The minister took into account the fact that getting an education has become popular and the graduates go for the “fashionable” professions (lawyer, manager, economist, etc.), meanwhile there remains a shortage of other professionals in Karabagh day by day.

There used to be a professional/technical institute in Karabagh where students studied to become tinsmiths, carpenters, plasterers, etc. After the Karabagh war, industrial education and the material/technical base were eliminated. Today, there are many businessmen and constructing organizations in Karabagh that are forced to invite professionals from Armenia. “It is more than necessary to create a vocational school in Karabagh. Construction on the vocational school will begin next year. We are even ready to teach those professions in schools this year, but unfortunately, we don’t have enough groups,” says K. Atayan. He also reflected upon the problems regarding science, stating that there have not been any essential achievements yet. The minister believes that it is also important to create a scientific center in Karabagh which will most likely be in Shushi. “Shushi must have a status of a scientific, educational and cultural center which will help develop education and science in the republic as a whole.”
