On October 20, during his interview after the meeting with Robert Kocharyan, the Commissar of the EU on Foreign Security and Policy Khavier Solana said that it would be better to open the border with Turkey soon. In response to the question as to whether it wasn’t more logical to operate the existing Kars-Gyumri railway than to construct a new railway from Kars to Akhalkalak Mr. Solana said: “We will do our best. In case of opening the border there will be no need for a new railway any more”.
