Perhaps the reason is important because not only the foreign affairs ministers of Turkey and Armenia will take place but also as confirmed yesterday – the US State Secretary Hillary Clinton. Today the latter is starting her European tour, which non-accidentally starts from Switzerland. “On Saturday the US State Secretary will visit Switzerland, where the ceremony of signing of the Turkey-Armenia protocols will take place,” yesterday stated Assistant to the State Secretary Philip Gordon. “The State Secretary is planning to start her tour from Zurich in order to participate in the ceremony and show her support to the process. We are sure this is a historical step on the way of improvement of Armenia-Turkey relations,” he said. Moreover Gordon mentioned that European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner are also expected to attend. This once again proves that this process is conducted by the “dominant support” of the US. Besides that the participation of Clinton proves that at least at this stage Turkey has reached the peak of its goal. Only two days ago during his interview to the Wall Street Journal the prime minister of Turkey Receb Tayip Erdogan stated, “We’d also wish to see the co-chairmen of the Minsk Group as witnesses during the signature of these protocols and if the French don’t show up it’s possible that the Americans and the Russians will be there.” Yesterday’s statement of Gordon was the best evidence of that.
