Yesterday the RA President Serzh Sargsyan met with Peter Semneby, the EU’s special representative to the South Caucasus. EU leaders were quick to welcome the August 31 announcement by the Armenian and Turkish foreign ministers that they have finalized two protocols envisaging the establishment of diplomatic relations and the reopening of the border between the two states. “I hope the two protocols can be signed, ratified, and implemented in the near term.” Sargsyan told Semneby that Yerevan continues to stand for an unconditional normalization of Turkish-Armenian ties and that “any step back from this principle can jeopardize the whole process.” Peter Semneby reaffirmed the European Union’s support of the process of normalizing Turkish-Armenian relations and expressed hope that this historic initiative by Armenia will end in success.
