Yesterday on the webpage of the Civilitas Foundation, headed by the former foreign affairs minister of Armenia Vartan Okanyan an article was posted dedicated to the recent developments of Armenian-Turkish relations, entitled “Call the things in their names.” According to the article the evaluation of the current state of the Armenian-Turkish relations should be built based on two theories. “According to the first one Turkey will not ever open the border with Armenia unless the agreement of Azerbaijan is there and without the registration of certain progress of the NKR conflict resolution on behalf of Azerbaijan. Indeed the ones, who believe in this theory, will not admit the contents of the two protocols released on August 31. Turkey has already officially received from Armenia anything it had not received ever since the independence of Armenia,” reads the article. And the second theory is that Turkey is ready to at least for show-off or temporarily have contradictions with Azerbaijan for the sake of opening the border with Armenia. This would mean that Armenia needs to take certain compromises as well. “The supporters of this theory can also be split into two parts. The first part believes that for Armenia it is priority to open the border and for that sake Armenia may put aside the historical reality. But these people should realize that even in this case the NKR issue will not be passed. If Turkey agrees to open the border with Armenia without drastic progress in the resolution of the NKR conflict there can be no doubt that Turkey received precise promises from the West, by which all the neighboring territories of the NKR will be received to Azerbaijan. The second part of these people believes in the irrefutable necessity of the border but doesn’t wish to do everything for that sake. So the whole discussion process should focus in this field.”
