Yesterday the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan were in meeting for more than two hours in the President Hotel in Moscow in the latest round of internationally mediated negotiations over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh area. The meeting took place at 5p.m. Armenian time. They made no announcement for the press after their negotiations. After two hours of face-to-face discussions, the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents, Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev, were joined by their foreign ministers and the three co-chairmen of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). It is not known what the outcome of the Aliyev-Sargsyan 7th meeting was. It is clearer to say that there were no results registered. After the meeting neither the presidents nor the foreign affairs ministers made any statements. The journalists, who were covering the meeting behind the doors, fixed only technical details, such as from which hall Aliyev went out, the handshaking of the presidents in the beginning of the meeting. The Armenian journalists as a top news stated how sad Aliyev was after the meeting and how glad Sargsyan was. However, as the over 10-year process of negotiations show neither the handshaking, nor the moods of the presidents tell anything about the contents of the meeting or the status of negotiations. Perhaps they will publicize some information today. Prior to that, only the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group made incomplete statements. In particular, Mathew Bryza, the US co-chair, said that the co-chairs were not expecting any documents to be signed in the framework of the meeting. “We hope that the presidents of the two countries would come to an agreement around certain principles,” he said. And his French counterpart Bernard Fassier stated, “There was no step forward but there was not a step backward either.” Nevertheless, despite the predictions of the experts yesterday no document was signed and judging from the concise information nothing like that will happen today either during the trilateral meeting of the presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. As the old forgotten song lyrics say, “tomorrow everything will start over.”
