Let’ commemorate the good times

On the threshold of the mayoral elections in Yerevan political powers and candidates do their best to demonstrate and show that they feel a great love to their city, write projects to develop the city infrastructures and show that they have done much for the sake of Yerevan (especially the pro-government politicians). While the love to Yerevan is demonstrated through scavenging and asphalting roads, the monument of Sasuntsi David, one of the biggest symbols of Yerevan is in real danger. This monument was built on metal construction and was installed 50 years ago. During this time it has not been reconstructed and it may fall any time. The symbol of the tolerance cup has been stolen and replaced with a piece of aluminum and the water tubes have been replaced with plastic ones. Specialists say that the government has to spend several dozens of dollars to reconstruct and revive the monument. However our government prefers to pay more than a half million dollar to a foreign glamorous producer to stage Spartak ballet instead of reconstructing the great monument built by Yervand Kochar. This situation of the monument symbolizes two things. First, it shows how much the city administration office, which is too busy in constructing elite buildings, cares about arts and the monument, which they will use in their pre-election brochures and campaign posters in two months. Second, it symbolizes the philosophy, according to which the cup of tolerance of the Armenian people is so full that it has been replaced with a cup made of a piece of aluminum.
