Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, said during his visit to Baku that he is surprised at the recent decision made by Azerbaijan, as a result of which the broadcast of radio Liberty, BBC and Voice of America media companies will be limited starting from January 1, 2009. “The government of Azerbaijan should understand that free speech is one of the most essential European values,” according to radio Liberty said Terry Davis during a meeting with Azeri officials. To note, in October the head of the Azeri national TV and radio board Nushirvan Megaramli announced that according to the law the foreign radio stations shall terminate broadcasting at local radio-waves but they can continue their programs through the Internet, satellite and cable connections.
