Yesterday presidential elections were conducted in Azerbaijan, as a result of which quite expectedly the winner among the 7 candidates was elected the incumbent president Heidar Aliyev. Yesterday’s elections proceeded in a free, fair and transparent environment with a 70% turnout of voters. As it’s known the actual opposition of Azerbaijan boycotted the elections and as stated by the chairman of the opposition Musafat party Isa Ghambar “this is not elections; this is tragic comedy.” Nevertheless, despite the boycott of the actual opposition and the participation of the “imitation of alternative opposition” the elections proceeded with almost no violations. And this cannot save Armenia from being disturbed as on the background of the falsified RA presidential elections on February 19 and the international attitude to that will even more debilitate the positions of Armenia in the resolution process of the NKR conflict as Azerbaijan avoided the negative opinion of the international community regarding its recent presidential elections. Moreover, the situation is absurd because after the bloodshed of March 1 in Armenia any CIS state received a privilege of a more democratic country than Armenia because the international assessment will be no worse for any country if there is no bloodshed as an aftermath of elections. So Azerbaijan appeared in a quite privileged position and has a great chance of restoring its image as a democratic country. But yesterday in Azerbaijan there were not only no cases of murder but also proceeded in a free and fair environment due to the country’s “opposition.” However, not only the opposition of Azerbaijan but also the Armenian government gave Aliyev a great chance to become more democratic than Armenia.
