Hunger strike till August 1

09/07/2008

Yesterday the people’s movement conducted one more rally in the surrounding area of the Matenadaran and later marched through the center of Yerevan. By the way, this was the first march after the events of March 1. As before the rally of June 20, this time there were many policemen near the Matenadaran and the Opera House too. They blocked the way to the Matenadaran till 7 p.m. Again, the rally, which was not sanctioned, started as a result of negotiations between the police and representatives of the people’s movement. First president Levon Ter-Petrosyan who had promised to suggest a concrete agenda of political dialog if the government released the political prisoners by that time (no political detainee was released during that period), said in his speech that he gave time to the government till August 1. Till that time, during 28 days people will go on hunger strike in the North Avenue. Levon Ter-Petrosyan demanded from the president to release the political prisoners immediately and fire some high ranked officials. The next rally of the people’s movement will take place on August 1, after which the opposition’s activities will depend on the government’s performance in terms of doing their requirements.
