On Monday co-reporters of the PACE monitoring commission John Prescott and George Colombier will visit Armenia. They are planning to have meetings with president Serzh Sargsyan and other politicians, including the first president of Armenia. The purpose of the visit is to get informed about the process of fulfilling the requirements of the PACE resolution. The destiny of the bill on Armenia during the PACE session to be launched on June 23 depends on their conclusions after their visit. “There is a suggestion to organize discussion on the operations of democratic institutes in Armenia as soon as possible, but only in case when the co-reporters of the PACE conclude after their visit to Armenia on June 16-17 that the authorities of Armenia have provided sufficient improvements in terms of the requirements of the PACE resolution,” writes the PACE statement issued yesterday. If not, the issue of Armenia will be discussed on June 25. By the way, yesterday the Venice Commission launched discussion of the amendment to the law on rallies, assemblies and demonstrations adopted during the state of emergency on March 17. These discussions will last two days. It is an interesting coincidence that one day prior to that date the city administration office of Yerevan rejected the opposition’s application to organize a rally in the Liberty square on June 20.
