Wives demand

20/04/2008

Yesterday a group of women supporting jailed oppositionists picketed the Council of Europe’s Yerevan office as the Strasbourg-based organization’s Parliamentary Assembly was to start its spring session with the discussion on Armenia featuring on its agenda. They demanded from the European structures to pressure on the RA government to release the political detainees and establish democracy in Armenia. “The PACE is going to discuss the case of Armenia and we demand a just result. When we met with Peter Semneby and other Ambassadors they promised to keep the pressure until the Armenian government will be willing to establish democracy,” told our reporter Melissa Brown, the wife of jailed former foreign minister Alexander Arzumanyan. The same action will continue today in front of the French Embassy and on the next day near the German and US embassies.
