Yesterday the district court of Kanaker-Zeytun, Yerevan, sentenced Hovhannes Harutiunyan to 18 months in prison. This information was provided to the Radio Liberty by Harutiunyan’s lawyer, Vardan Zurnachyan. It is not a conditional sentence, although the counsel for prosecution demanded longer sentence. According to the lawyer his client bought the bullets for his legally acquired Sayga rifle. “The strictness of such a verdict is perhaps conditioned by the fact that my client was Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s proxy on the election day,” said the lawyer and added that the prosecuting side claims that part of the bullets are not for the Sayga type of rifle. The expert concluded that the bullets were produced earlier than Sayga rifle. “However it doesn’t mean that it is forbidden to use these bullets for Sayga rifle,” insisted the lawyer and informed that they are planning to apply to the Court of Appeal.
