Free but partly

23/01/2008

According to the famous Freedom House US watchdog Armenia has remained “partly free” country for seven years now because of its leadership’s limited respect for political rights and civil liberties. NKR also deserved the same classification. Neighboring states Georgia and Turkey are also considered partly free states. As of Georgia in previous years the same organization considered it one of the most progressive states of the CIS. However this year its rating declined in terms of political liberties and rights. By the way, according to the report only Ukraine out of all the CIS states was considered free. Christopher Walker, Freedom House’s director of studies said that after the orange revolution several elections have been held in that country, which all proceeded in a free and fair environment. “This is an unusual phenomenon in the CIS, where frequently elections are conducted in manipulative and unfair methods,” he said. In total, according to the Freedom House, there are 90 free, 60 partly free and 43 non-free states in the world.
