Russia’s influence is growing

The second mobile operator of Armenia, VivaCell has officially approved the information that VivaCell company has been sold to MTS, a Russian company. According to their information, MTS has bought 80% of the shares and paid 310 million Euro for this transaction. According to their shares purchase agreement, the remaining 20% of shares will be sold to MTS in 2010 and the purchase price will be defined based on the assessment by an international independent bank. In fact, in addition to Armentel, which belongs to Vimpelcom company, one more key operator of communication was given to the Russians. To note, the Russians have many important strategic companies and institutions in Armenia such as the main energetic plants, the atomic station, the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline, many production factories, several big banks, etc. The only thing that they haven’t taken under their control yet is the authorities.
