Kocharyan has started friendly visits

19/09/2007

Today by the invitation of the President of Georgia, Mikhail Sahakashvili President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan will pay an unofficial, “friendly” one-day visit to Georgia, more concretely to Batumi.

At the beginning of October Kocharyan will take part in the recurrent summit of Presidents of the CIS member states in Dushanbe. In the same city, the RA President will take part in the summits of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EvAzES). On October 10-12 Kocharyan will visit Brussels to meet with the heads of European structures. The RA President will also visit Finland on his Finnish counterpart’s invitation on an official visit. This information was publicized by the speaker of the Armenian president Victor Soghomonyan yesterday. According to him, foreign delegations will also be visiting Armenia, however the dates are not clear yet. Soghomonyan also mentioned that his next press conference will be held perhaps in February or when there would be something to “talk about”. It’s hard to guess what exactly Soghomonyan had spoken about during yesterday’s press conference. Nevertheless afterwards he started to answer the questions of the journalists. During the Q&A session it became clear that the Kocharyan-Aliyev meeting may be held in Dushanbe. According to Soghomonyan that meeting depends on the visit of the co-chairmen of the Minsk Group to the region. The speaker of the president of Armenia commented on the initiative of the Heritage Party, the bill on the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh. “If I’m not mistaken, a year or a year and a half ago the president said in an interview with the Slovenian Vega newspaper that if the talks prove fruitless, and it appears pointless to continue the talks, one of the moves towards protecting the security of the peoples of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, a political move, might be the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic by Armenia,” Victor Soghomonyan reminded, adding that the de facto recognition occurred a long time ago. “The failure in a certain majoritarian district doesn’t mean he should benefit from the NKR issue. I think it’s unacceptable,” added Soghomonyan. The journalists have also asked Soghomonyan about the possible breakthrough in the Armenian and Turkish relations from the new president of Turkey. As a response he mentioned, “If they were likely to make any moves, I think they would have done when Gyul was foreign minister. So, no, Armenia does not expect a breakthrough in the Armenian and Turkish relations after Gyul became president,” said the speaker of the Armenian president.
