Despite the great number of murders, which are committed if not every day then at least once every 10 days it turns out that the “statistical data” are not troublesome at all. If there is anyone, who believes that there is great level of crime in Armenia, he/she is mistaken because according to the statistical data, publicized by the acting Prosecutor General of Armenia, Aghvan Hovsepyan during the 8 months of the current year not only the indices are not troublesome but also there is a 13% decrease of crime level compared to the same period of the previous year.
This information was publicized in the National Assembly by Aghvan Hovsepyan, who is nominated as a candidate for the Prosecutor General’s position by President Robert Kocharyan. Today the NA will undoubtedly give the majority of its votes for Hovsepyan. Prior to the election, however, the MPs will have an opportunity to ask Hovsepyan questions about the last period unrevealed crimes, such as murders, trafficking, drugs, etc. Before speaking of the questions asked, we’d like to quote a part of the opening speech of Hovsepyan, “Our work also has certain drawbacks and mistakes (before that he was speaking about the great improvements in the judicial system – L.S.), which are connected with rough violations of the legal system, the feeling of immunity among certain people and incompleteness of fight against crime… We also realize that these shortcomings are also result of low professionalism level of certain officers as well as improper comprehension of their functions and posts. The Prosecutor’s Officer is principally trying to get rid of such employees. We don’t agree with such style of activity.” Afterwards as an encouraging example Hovsepyan mentioned that in the past years 15 officials of the Prosecutor’s Office were fired and 26 were subject to penalty. He didn’t simplify who exactly was punished and for whet deeds.
