Ter-Petrosyan or Sargsyan?

Suren Surenyants, council member of the “Republic” political party, said on Monday that the “opposition existing since 2001 ceased to exist in terms of institutionalism” after May 12, and Armenia is facing the need to have a new, qualified opposition. According to Surenyants, the best solution will be to disband the right-wing parties and form one right wing.

“That will be the peace party of the Republic of Armenia which will go against, figuratively speaking, the party of war.”

He, as well as leader of “Republic” Aram Z. Sargsyan, clarified who the “staff members of the opposition” were after the elections, but Surenyants proposes taking a look at the platforms of any party before making any comments. Will they lead to qualitative reforms or not? According to Surenyants, there are two political figures capable of making qualitative reforms in Armenia and they are leader of “Republic” Aram Z. Sargsyan and first president of the Republic of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Surenyants hopes that the oppositional parties will unite under one of the two above-mentioned leaders before the presidential elections. Surenyants also touched upon the initiative of representative of the “Impeachment” alliance, Nikol Pashinyan, to hold a public meeting for even one citizen. He announced that public meetings couldn’t be the job of just one person.

“The public meetings are tied to the people who gather in the square. Pashinyan is simply one of the leaders of the movement,” said Surenyants. The latter had difficulty saying how long the public meetings will continue, but believes that it would be right to stop for a while “in order to present new approaches to the people”.
