Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian received EU special representative Peter Semnebi on Friday. Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process, Semnebi said that the EU is still interested in the settlement process not only because Armenia and Azerbaijan are important partners of the EU, but also because the EU is aimed at creating an atmosphere of trust and showing more help. Sarkissian mentioned that the frequent bellicose declarations made by Aliev are only filled with pessimism.
“If Azerbaijan is really aiming for compromises and the peaceful settlement of the conflict, then why don’t the authorities of that country make announcements ratifying such a position and instead work with the opposite logic? Perhaps they are thinking that they will compel the quick signing of the document in favor of Baku by being in the strong position. That approach is doomed,” mentioned Sarkissian.
He told Semnebi that it is hard to imagine how the president of Azerbaijan, who is making bellicose declarations, will explain the meaning of his announcements to the people when it comes time to reach an agreement on the compromises during the negotiations. Semnebi tried to explain that as Aliev’s manner of working of the Azerbaijani mass media, saying that recently it seems as though there is no such attidude in Aliev’s approaches.
