14/06/2007

Tigran Torosyan, chairman of the RA National Assembly, received on Monday the delegation headed by chief executive director of the “Millennium Challenges” corporation John Danilovich. Torosyan mentioned that the fact that the Armenian parliamentary elections were conducted based on democratic standards is of great political significance for the continuation of the “Millennium Challenges” program. The National Assembly chairman also mentioned that the National Assembly has quickly responded to and validated the contract and is ready to support the implementation of the program, which is of great significance for the development of Armenia. Danilovich informed that he was content with the work of the program implementation, mentioning that until now 7 million dollars have been provided and a 25 million-dollar contract has been signed. He informed Torosyan that the U.S. Congress, which was elected in December 2006, has given its consent to the Republican President George Bush’s program, despite the Democratic majority in Congress. This means that the program has been granted the right for long-term activity. Based on that, Danilovich is getting ready to raise the issue of broadening legal privileges in Congress, which will support the increase of effectiveness of the “Millennium Challenges” program. Danilovich plans to ask Congress for the right to sign the second concurrent contract during the implementation of the program of the first contract, which may stimulate the effectiveness of the program.

Danilovich was also received Monday by Armenian PM Serge Sargsyan. The latter mentioned that the next elections are going to be better than the previous and that the reforms are going to continue. Sargsyan underlined the support of friendly countries and donor organizations, which will allow solving the present issues more effectively, and in a shorter period of time. He stated that the Armenian people have certain hopes for the Armenian program being implemented through funding by the “Millennium Challenges” Fund, and the government is ready to do its best so that the people will see results in the near future.
