On June 7, by the decision of the first instance court of the Shirak Marz, Gyumri resident Hovhannes Sahakyan was sentenced to two years and six months in jail, based on the charge of giving false information regarding a serious crime. Sahakyan had used a mobile phone card for one time use only on April 21 to call the police and inform them that his cousins Hmayak, Armen, Artyom and Robert Sahakyan of the cities of Spitak and Vanadzor had committed the assassination attempt on Gyumri mayor Vardan Ghukasyan on April 2. He also told the police that the Sahakyan brothers had received 150,000 dollars for committing the crime. Hovhannes Sahakyan mentioned that his relatives were also getting ready to murder the mayor of Vanadzor for another 200,000 dollars. The author of the false alarm did not forget to mention that the Sahakyan brothers had burned Vardan Ghukasyan’s car after the assassination attempt. The police then found out that the information was false. During investigation, the defendant had confessed that punishing his relatives whom he had personal hatred for was what motivated him to give false information.
