30/05/2007

Yesterday Nikol Pashinyan, who was the first person in the proportional list of “Impeachment” bloc and is the chief editor of “Haikakan Zhamanak” newspaper, started a hunger strike at Freedom Square. With this hunger strike, he is protesting against the violations during the parliamentary elections. Pashinyan says that this is not a disappointment, but a struggle against disappointment. “What do I want to achieve? I want the citizens of Armenia, who understand that the existing situation is very dangerous, to take a piece of paper, write “1+” on it, come here and attach the papers near the existing papers, and show that they won’t obey the authorities in any way, and are going to participate in the upcoming rally on Friday since they are ready to bear responsibility for their future and struggle against violence. Accordingly, we will try to cover all the territory of the Republic in “1+1+1+1” signs, later all the territory of Yerevan and Armenia by making every single citizen of Armenia a participant of this protest,” Pashinyan said yesterday. Yesterday people were attaching the mentioned signs in the Freedom Square not far from the Tumanyan monument. These signs were being attached by different people, who were trying to support Pashinyan. Some of them had printed the papers, some of them had written by hand, and there were even people that wrote their names on the papers. Pashinyan is going to continue with hunger strike till Friday, thus preparing people for the rally, which will take place on Friday, at 19:00. Yesterday he was accompanied by over 100 citizens. There were also representatives of other parties there. By the way, after the parliamentary elections, the number of the members of “Impeachment” bloc tends to be increasing. The ADP and Hnchakyan parties have already joined them, and tomorrow the representatives of “Legal State” party will be there as well.
