American Dream

Armenians earning a dollar a day are considered to be in extreme poverty, and the poor are those who make up to 2 dollars a day. As you can see, the threshold of the minimum 20,000 dram salary frees the wide-range masses from being labeled poor in Armenia. Interestingly, based on the calculations of the American “Millennium Challenges” program, nearly 30% of the Armenian population is considered poor, but that does not fit in with the Americans’ picture of poverty. In the U.S., the person who can’t buy one kilogram of chicken with his hourly salary is considered poor. If we estimate these preconditions for Armenia, then at the end of the 8-hour working day, the “poor” should have earned 9,600 drams (the price for one kilogram of chicken in Armenia starts from 1200 drams).
