Last night at about 22:00, after the board session of RPA, an attempt was made on the life of the mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan. Ghukasyan was badly wounded and taken to the hospital. Two (one of them a “Mercedes”) cars carrying Mayor Ghukasyan, his top aides, and bodyguards came under a hail of automatic gunfire. The gunshots were reportedly fired from another vehicle that overtook the motorcade on a highway linking the two cities. Three of the men died on the spot, while another, Ghukasyan’s driver, was taken to a hospital in Yerevan with a bullet in his head, where he remained in a critical condition. The driver and several other persons died. Several other people who accompanied the mayor were taken to the Emergency Hospital of Nor Nork, Yerevan, with bad injuries. According to our information, as it was too dark nobody was able to track down the car that had fired gunshots on the escort of the mayor.
