23/12/2006

Yesterday an unprecedented thing happened in Armenia; the state commission on regulating public services limited the right of “Armentel” company on Internet monopoly. Yesterday the mentioned commission decided to amend License 60 given to “Armentel” company, thus raising the limit of other companies and the solely right of “Armentel” for international Internet connection. According to the mentioned decision, “Armentel” will lose its monopoly on international traffic of voice and information. According to commission member Samvel Arabajyan, the owner of “Armentel”, “Vimpel Com” company has stated that it wants to resign all the monopolistic rights that “Armentel” has. Thus, the other Armenian providers of Internet services are given a right to have international information access, in addition, “VivaCell” company has a right to have international voice access itself too. The mentioned decision will enter into force in one month from the date of its adoption. It is expected that “Armentel” will lose all the other monopolistic rights as well by November, 2007 (IP telephone connection).
