“Javakhk is not Artsakh”

Analyst from Washington on international affairs, economy, security and political developments, the former USSR, the Middle East and South East Asia Richard Kirakosyan recently gave a report about the Javakhk issue at the American University of Armenia. According to Kirakosyan, if we look at it from the national issue perspective, there are more Armenians in Javakhk than there are in Nagorno Karabagh. “Armenia and Armenians face a very important issue dealing with the situation at hand in Javakhk and security. However the Javakhk issue is not the Artsakh issue,” said R. Kirakosyan, adding that whereas Javakhk has a future with Georgia, Karabagh will never be a part of Azerbaijan. “As for the security and potential stability in Javakhk, that must continue to be observed in the context of Georgia,” said the analyst. According to him, the “Georgianization” politics has taken its toll during the term of Mikhail Sahakashvili, but at the same time Georgia is trying to develop Javakhk economically in order to have Javakhk reintegrate with Georgia. “Although the so-called “Revolution of Roses” took place, however, today Georgia is still failing as a state because the centralized government isn’t able to have an influence on the country with its power and legitimacy. He is of the opinion that Javakhk can be a perspective key for Georgia because autonomy for Javakhk may be a new approach adopted by the Georgian authorities and may help improve the policy regarding the relations between Abkhazia and South Osetia. According to the analyst, having Javakhk located in Georgia is more important for Armenia from the geopolitical perspective than having Javakhk be a region of Armenia.
