During his interview with the “Arka” news agency, head of the National Democratic Union Vazgen Manoukyan announced that the construction of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline is not only about financial issues. “The important thing for Armenia is to have as less dependence on Russia by having its own pipeline.” According to Manukyan, if in the future the Iran-Armenia pipeline reaches Europe, then Armenia will essentially improve its positions in the international arena by considering Europe’s significant dependence on energetic resources. By becoming a transit country Armenia would play a more significant role in the region. “The gas sources of Iran are huge and it’s easy to see that the Iran-Armenia has a great outlook because Armenia is the only country through which the pipeline can go through to make it to Europe,” said leader of the NDU.
