The most correct decision for the national anthem

27/10/2006

After long and hard discussions about the Armenian national anthem, the committee finally made a decision: none of the top five choices was selected. The best music for the anthem was recognized as the music of Soviet Armenia’s anthem and there was no winner for the lyrics to the anthem. This decision of the committee may be considered as an extremely correct decision because it’s not only a decision, but also a delay and making people anticipate and leaving the four authors in the same category. The committee’s decision was very late because the deadline for the decision was Armenia’s Independence Day-September 21.

If the Armenian government and the Armenian National Assembly confirm the committee’s decision, then they will later declare another contest and form a new committee due to the fact that there can’t be an anthem without lyrics. The anthem must have lyrics sooner or later, but for now, all Armenians hear is the instrumental anthem. This is exactly what happened to Russia when it had an anthem, but no lyrics. It’s quite possible that the 700,000 drams foreseen for the winner of the anthem contest will be transferred to the Aram Khachatryan home/museum.

It is worth mentioning that just two months ago during the first stage of the contest, the majority of committee members was in favor of Tigran Mansuryan’s music. The committee’s suggestion to keep the music composed by Aram Khachatryan will be discussed at the National Assembly, where the ARF has already presented a bill for keeping the national anthem the way it is.
