They said it was “symbolic”

Back when people were against including the dual citizenship clause in the Armenian constitution, Galust Sahakyan used to assure the people that it would be just be symbolic. But this is not the case. Recently, there were discussions dedicated to the dual citizenship issue, during which the government presented its bill. According to that, Armenians with dual citizenship may vote in elections in Armenia. It means that someone living in Africa or somewhere else may come here and be elected as president. This shows that the bill must state that Armenia is the homeland for all Armenians living in or outside Armenia. “When someone is granted citizenship of another country, he/she gets certain rights as well, i.e. anyone who comes to Armenia from abroad and gets Armenian citizenship will have the same rights as local Armenians”, said deputy Minister of Justice Gevorg Malkhasyan.
