Chakhmakhchyan’s mandate is no longer in effect

The Kalmikian parliament has decided to take the mandate of Federal Council senator Levon Chakhmakhchyan away. The parliament held a closed voting session and 18 MPs out of the 19 MPs voted for calling the senator back. On June 3, head of the Russian Federation Council, Sergey Mironov wrote a letter to the president of Kalmikia asking them to take the mandate of Chakhmakhchyan away from him. The previous day Chakhmakhchyan and the chief accountant of the Russian-Armenian cooperation organization, Arushanov were arrested and accused of corruption. According to the Russian general prosecutor’s office, Chakhmakhchyan is connected with this scandal in the Clearance Chamber because his daughter’s husband works there. The latter, Armen Hovhannisyan was arrested on June 3. On June 6 the general prosecutor’s office asked the Russian Supreme Court to approve the existence of crime in acts committed by Chakhmakhchyan.
