Dropping mandate

15/04/2006

Yesterday member of the parliamentary ULP party, MP Levon Poghosyan dropped his mandate and ceased his parliamentary activities. He says that he has done this himself without any pressure and the reason is that he wants to work somewhere else. We should confess that this is a very specific case in the history of our parliament. “Before being elected I used to be the head of “Mshak” CJSC. This company works in the IT field. It is time-consuming for me. This is the reason why I decided to resign. Besides that by doing this I will be right from the legal point of view”, said Mr. Poghosyan to us. But on the other hand the previous Constitution didn’t allow deputies to be involved in business activities either, why didn’t he do this before? To this question he answered, “I am a stock holder and now I am going to use more time for my work there”. It is worth mentioning that most Armenian MPs are doing business and they should either drop their mandates or stop doing business. In regard to this Arthur Baghdasaryan said, “As far as I know, the other MPs have stopped doing business. If some of them have stopped, I think that this should set an example for other MPs. It is not clear yet who will substitute Mr. Poghosyan. The next person in the proportional list of the ULP is Armen Alaverdyan. But we were informed from the head of this party, Arsen Arsenyan, that they would answer to this question only after they hold a board meeting and make a decision.
