“The Karabagh conflict is not moving forward and the number of people dying in the region is proof of that,” said Freizer in Washington. According to her, “after the incomplete negotiations in Rambulle”, 19 people died as a result of the ceasefire violation in February alone, of which eight were average citizens. In 2005, 90 people died in the region. According to Sabina Freizer, although the restart of war “is evitable”, it can be the result of “tension” in the region.
Sabina Freizer also stated that the residencies outside the Karabagh territory under the control of Armenians “are in ruins and must be reconstructed”.
“The conflict is pretty tense based on the geographical location,” said Caucasus director of the International Alert Group. She added that the restart of a war may involve Russia, Iran, Georgia and Turkey.
“This is a conflict, which has the potential of turning into a global one,” she said.
As for the conflict resolution, S. Freizer says the following:
“All countries in the Southern Caucasus don’t consider making compromises as positive. Not one country dares to speak out and accept compromises as necessary for both sides. On the contrary, Azerbaijan is still spending most of its military budget. Azerbaijan’s military budget has gone up by five times during the past couple of years and the country is trying to make it the equivalent to Armenia’s total budget. So, Azerbaijan is not only preparing internally, but also it is also getting ready to go to war if necessary.”
