According to “Financial Times” newspaper Russia and China have told the US that they will recognize the independence of Kosovo, the breakaway Serbian province. The newspaper writes that according to western officials the US president’s administration has assured Russia and China that this independence will be specific and will not serve an example for Chechnya, Tibet and Taiwan independence. According to “Financial Times” Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, discussed the issue with Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, in Washington last week and was said that Moscow would not stand in the way of independence. However, analysts said some people in Moscow wanted a better deal with Washington that might leave open the possibility of a Kosovo-type solution for other regions, including Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia, which is backed by Russia.
