Prosecutors: Are They Outlaws?

24/07/2005

The media have published some articles stating that some government
officials are not pleased with the work done by the “fight against
corruption” department of the prosecutors’ office. The reason for that
is that Chief Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan has turned it all into a
political lever for bringing up actions against certain officials.
Judging from the “168 hours” weekly interview with Minister of Justice
of the Republic of Armenia David Harutunyan, it became clear that he is
also not too pleased of how the department carries out its actions. “In
general, I believe that each governmental body should participate in
the fight against corruption. As for the methods used for fighting, we
may have differing opinions. By methods I mean turning it into a
political lever and how to use it. If prosecutors solve cases legally,
then I don’t see anything wrong with that. But if they do illegal
things, then I don’t favor that and consider it incorrect.” Can we say
that the “fight against corruption” department of the prosecutor’s
office uses “other” illegal methods? In response to this, David
Harutunyan said: “We have evidence that there are “other” methods being
used.”
