Less crimes?

14/02/2006

In 2005, there were not too many crimes committed in Armenia and police have worked efficiently. This is what deputy chief police officer and General/Major Hovhannes Hunanyan said during a press conference held yesterday. According to Hunanyan, there have been less crimes in 2005. Compared to the 10,080 crimes registered in 2004, that number went down to 8875 in 2005. Major crimes went down by 10.3% and minor crimes-23.7%. The number of shootings went down by 15.8% and crimes committed in public have decreased by 23.7%. However, there has been a rise in rape and theft in 2005, compared to 2004. The number of car accidents has also gone up-310 people have died and 1773 citizens have been injured. Mr. Hunanyan says that the reason for the numerous accidents is due to the fact that there are too many cars on the streets. During the past three years, there are 53000 more cars in Armenia and 20,000 were produced in 2005. The deputy chief police officer also said that there have been 563 units of gunpowder, 1654 units of explosives, 113,169 bullets and other weapons. Also, there were 8 cases of bribery committed by officials and Hunanyan promised to go further in detail later. 20 police officers have been charged with attack on citizens, not counting the number of crimes, violating laws and other crimes in 2005. In addition, compared to 2004, there have not been so many juvenile delinquents.
