Unhygienic food at schools

22/12/2005 Lusine STEPANYAN

This year 8,6 billion dram was provided by the budget to cover the expenses for these governmental contractual works. “This budget year was special because we also implemented school building reconstruction programs. About 1, 2 billion dram was totally spent only for school building reconstructions. We included 22 schools in this program this year”, said Mr. Areyan. He assured that the program had been fully implemented and was already finished. The principal was the city construction ministry, but the city administration office cooperated with them too and they made revisions in schools together. They controlled the work process and the quality too. “All these organizations did their work well and finished the contractual works on time. The quality of their works was good too”, said Mr. Areyan. They also involved 15 schools in the program supported by “Social Investments Foundation”.

Boiler rooms

“The savings in our city construction draft program covered 53 million dram. The mayor suggested spending this money on schools, and the government decided to spend this money with the purposes to construct new boiler rooms for schools and reconstruct the existing old ones”, said Mr. Areyan. So we included three schools in this program (# 162 school of Malatsia, # 78 and 72 schools of Arakbir communities of Yerevan). Currently there are 42 schools in Yerevan that have boiler rooms and central heating. They are going to implement this program in 2006 too.

Unhygienic food

The authorized department of the city administration office registered numerous shortcomings at schools regarding food. A representative of the city administration office and a representative of the health care ministry visited some schools in Yerevan and saw the situation in the place. They made a statement on what they had registered. They registered numerous shortcomings such as the absence of food hygiene control by the authorized bodies, lack of the relevant documents and other catering shortcomings. After presenting this statement to the authorized bodies the principals of those schools were ordered to correct the situation and work these shortcomings out. Mr. Areyan says: “First of all schools must provide hygienic conditions in all their territories. And as for food, they must make contracts with such companies that have legal documents to produce such food and comply with all hygienic norms. We will continue controlling this field. We will always be attentive. We were the first to speak about these shortcomings first and we must solve all these problems”.
