Far From Solution

“We haven’t been offered any new suggestions. We discussed only issues concerning Karabakh conflict negotiations”, said Karabakh president Arkadi Ghukasyan after his meeting with OSCE co-chairmen. He also expressed his complaints to Azerbaijan by saying: “The aggressive announcements on the part of Azerbaijan don’t support the regulation process of Karabakh and all negotiations may fail”. Arkadi Ghukasyan assured OSCE co-chairmen that the negotiations would not bring to any positive results in case Karabakh doesn’t take part in this process. In connection with this Mr. Ghukasyan said: “The problem can’t be solved without Karabakh”. According to him the territories that Azerbaijan calls as “occupied” are a security zone for Karabakh: “There is no sense to discuss any issues without discussing the status of Karabakh. We will have to make compromises in case of any solutions of the conflict. As for the question about what kind of compromises we will have to make, this is a subject for negotiations. I can say one thing for sure: Karabakh will never be a part of Azerbaijan”. By the way, these days it is spoken much that the conflict solution is expected in 2006. In connection with this Arkadi Ghukasyan said: “The co-chairmen say that 2006 is a good period for conflict solution, because next year there are elections neither in Azerbaijan nor in Armenia. But I can’t say whether the conflict will be solved in 2006 or not”. As for his own opinion, he thinks that we are still far from solution: “There are a lot of issues in Karabakh to discuss with Azerbaijan, and if Azerbaijan wants to solve the problem, they must first of all hold talks with Karabakh. I asked the co-chairmen why Azerbaijan didn’t do that”. But the co-chairmen didn’t answer to Mr. Ghukasyan’s question.
